The Hobart Hurricanes bounced back from their record low in the opening game with a dominant performance. Mitch Owen, the Hurricanes’ opener, scored a standout century, leading his team to a commanding win over the Perth Scorchers. Just two days after their embarrassing defeat to the Melbourne Renegades, where they set a record low score of 74, the Hurricanes triumphed by eight wickets, chasing down the target with four balls to spare.

Owen’s Century Powers Hurricanes to Historic Win Over Scorchers

Mitch Owen, alongside West Indies star Shai Hope, dominated the Perth Scorchers’ star-studded bowling attack with a 101-run partnership, securing the Hobart Hurricanes’ first win against the Scorchers in Hobart since January 1, 2013. Despite needing seven runs to win in the final over, Owen sealed the victory with a boundary off Lance Morris, completing his century and ensuring the result. Owen’s outstanding innings was a remarkable turnaround, as he had previously managed just 89 runs in 14 T20 games with a highest score of 28. The 23-year-old’s century, off 63 balls, included nine boundaries and five sixes, one of which even sailed out of the stadium.

The Scorchers, missing veteran seamer Andrew Tye, still boasted an impressive bowling lineup featuring Jhye Richardson, Lance Morris, Jason Behrendorff, Ashton Agar, and Cooper Connolly. However, the Hurricanes were undeterred, with Owen leading the charge. Riley Meredith was superb with the ball, claiming 3 for 27 and contributing to a key run-out of Josh Inglis, who was closing in on 50. Inglis was dismissed in a mix-up with captain Ashton Turner. The Hurricanes fielded brilliantly, with Ben McDermott taking a fantastic catch behind the stumps to dismiss Finn Allen and Billy Stanlake pulling off a remarkable catch running back from short third to dismiss Connolly.

Hurricanes’ bowlers, including captain Nathan Ellis and the experienced Chris Jordan, were exceptional in the death overs, limiting the Scorchers to just 27 runs off the last five overs. This win made the Hurricanes the sixth team to win while batting second in the first seven games of the BBL. The Hurricanes (1-1) will have a six-day break before facing the Strikers at the Adelaide Oval, while the Scorchers (1-1) will play the Renegades in Melbourne on Monday.

Anmolpreet Singh scored the third-fastest List A century in 35 balls during the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Anmolpreet Singh, the top-order batter from Punjab, has etched his name in the record books by scoring the third-fastest List A century. His remarkable 35-ball century places him behind only Jake Fraser-McGurk (29 balls) and AB de Villiers (31 balls) on the all-time list. Anmolpreet achieved this feat during a Vijay Hazare Trophy match in Ahmedabad, coming in at No. 3 after the dismissal of captain Abhishek Sharma in the second over. He reached his century with 11 fours and eight sixes, taking a particular liking to offspinner Techi Neri, who gave away 31 runs in just one over.

Anmolpreet’s explosive innings led Punjab to a swift victory, as they chased down Arunachal Pradesh’s total of 164 in just 12.5 overs, winning by nine wickets. The young batter finished with an impressive 115 runs from 45 balls, adding one more six and four after reaching his century. His opening partner, Prabhsimran Singh, provided solid support, remaining unbeaten on 35 off 25 balls. Despite the high economy rates of all the Arunachal Pradesh bowlers, left-arm spinner Hardik Verma was the most economical, conceding 9.52 runs per over.

AB de Villiers held the record for the fastest List A century, a remarkable 44-ball century against West Indies in January 2015, which still stands as the fastest ODI century. Prior to De Villiers, Corey Anderson of New Zealand held the record with a 36-ball century against the West Indies in 2014. De Villiers’ List A record was later surpassed by Fraser-McGurk, who scored a century in just 29 balls for South Australia against Tasmania in the Marsh Cup in October 2023, although his team lost that game.

Anmolpreet Singh, who has previously played for Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL, has had mixed success in the tournament. Despite his blistering century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he went unsold in the latest IPL auction, highlighting the unpredictability of the T20 market.
