Litton Das, left out of Bangladesh’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 earlier in the day, channeled his emotions into a stunning performance in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) by evening. Opening for the Dhaka Capitals against Durbar Rajshahi, he smashed his maiden T20 century, remaining unbeaten on 125 off just 55 balls. His innings, which featured ten fours and nine sixes, came at a blistering strike rate of 227.27. Litton’s commanding knock showcased his ability to dominate bowlers and set the tone for an unforgettable game.

Litton was ably supported by Tanzid Hasan, who will represent Bangladesh in the upcoming Champions Trophy. Together, the pair put on a record-breaking 241-run partnership off 118 balls, the second-highest stand in all men’s T20 cricket. Their extraordinary collaboration propelled Dhaka Capitals to a mammoth total of 254 for 1, setting a new benchmark for the highest team total in BPL history. This emphatic performance highlighted the brilliance of Litton and Tanzid, leaving a lasting impression on fans and critics alike.

Litton Das Shines with Record-Breaking T20 Century

Litton Das’s scintillating century came off just 44 balls, making it the second-fastest by a Bangladeshi player in men’s T20 cricket. The record remains with Parvez Hossain, who smashed a 42-ball hundred for Fortune Barishal in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup in December 2020. Litton’s unbeaten 125 also placed him fourth on the list of highest individual scores in BPL history, trailing only two innings by Chris Gayle and one by Tamim Iqbal. His dominance at the crease marked a significant milestone in his T20 career and showcased his ability to shift gears effortlessly.

Rajshahi’s decision to bowl first initially seemed promising as Dhaka Capitals crawled to 22 for 0 in the first four overs. However, the tide turned when Tanzid Hasan exploded with a 21-run over off Sunzamul Islam, igniting Dhaka’s charge. Litton, who was just 10 off 9 balls at the end of the fifth over, found his rhythm in the final over of the Powerplay. Facing SM Meherob, he struck three consecutive boundaries — 4, 6, and 4 — to kickstart his innings, setting the stage for an unforgettable batting masterclass.

Litton and Tanzid Power Dhaka to Record-Breaking Victory

Litton Das reached his fifty in the ninth over with a six off a no-ball, setting the tone for Dhaka Capitals’ relentless charge. By the halfway mark, they were cruising at 115 for 0, with Tanzid Hasan also bringing up his fifty with a six off Ryan Burl in the 11th over. Litton’s century came in the 16th over, with a four off Shafiul Islam, while Tanzid reached his hundred in the final over with a boundary. Tanzid’s brilliant knock ended on 108 off 64 balls (six fours, eight sixes, strike rate 168.75), but Dhaka’s momentum continued as Sabbir Rahman and Litton added one six each to finish on a record-breaking 254 for 1 — the highest total in BPL history.

In reply, Durbar Rajshahi faltered under the immense pressure, collapsing to 34 for 5 early in their innings. Ryan Burl offered some resistance with an unbeaten 47, but it was far from enough. Rajshahi were bowled out for 105 in the 16th over, falling 150 runs short of their target. The commanding performance by Dhaka Capitals underscored their batting dominance, with Litton and Tanzid’s historic partnership taking center stage in a game that redefined BPL standards.

Jhye Richardson’s Season Cut Short by Shoulder Surgery

Despite the Perth Scorchers still being in contention for the finals, fast bowler Jhye Richardson will undergo his third shoulder surgery this week, ending his domestic season. Cricket Australia contracted the 28-year-old with the long-term goal of being fit for the 2025-26 Ashes series. Richardson’s ongoing shoulder issues stem from an initial dislocation while fielding in an ODI in March 2019, followed by surgeries in 2019 and 2020. Despite recovering to play at intervals, he has suffered multiple dislocations since, including during a celebration in his Sheffield Shield return in November. His inability to fully stabilize the shoulder has limited his participation in matches and his impact on the field.

Fielding has been particularly challenging for Richardson since his first injury. Once a dynamic presence, he has struggled with throwing from the outfield, resorting to underarm throws or avoiding dives altogether to prevent further dislocations. This limitation was evident in the Scorchers’ loss to the Sydney Sixers, where hesitation caused by his condition contributed to a dropped catch. Richardson has also had other injury setbacks, including hamstring surgery last summer, compounding his challenges. Despite these issues, Australian selectors deemed him fit enough to join the Test squad for the fourth and fifth Tests against India, though he did not play. However, he was overlooked for the Sri Lanka Test tour, with Sean Abbott chosen as the backup pacer alongside Starc and Boland.

Richardson’s availability has been sporadic for the Scorchers, playing only five of their eight Big Bash League matches due to his Test commitments. The team currently sits fifth on the table, still within reach of a finals spot despite losing their last three matches. Richardson’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, but his decision to prioritize surgery underscores his commitment to long-term recovery and readiness for future international campaigns, including the Ashes.

Richardson Prioritizes Surgery for Long-Term Recovery

But it is understood that a decision was made on Richardson’s surgery a week ago and CA announced it just a day out from Scorchers’ next match against Sydney Thunder.

“After careful consideration and many discussions with my medical team, I’ve made the decision to undergo shoulder surgery to improve stability and reduce the risk of future injury,” Richardson said in the statement.

“For the past few years, I have been limited by my shoulder in the field and know how increasingly important it is to be capable to back up my teammates. While it’s a tough call, especially as it means I won’t be able to finish the season with the Scorchers, this is the best option to set me up for a strong and healthy return to cricket.

“The timing of the surgery is crucial to ensure I have the best possible build-up, including Shield cricket leading into next summer. I’ll be giving everything I’ve got to the rehab process, determined to come back as the best version of myself.”
