Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams were both hospitalized following a frightening on-field collision during the match at Optus Stadium on Friday night. Bancroft has been ruled out of the remainder of the BBL due to a broken nose and shoulder injury, while Sams is expected to be sidelined for at least 12 days under concussion protocols. As of Saturday morning, both players were still in hospital awaiting CT scan results to assess any further injuries. They will remain in Perth and will not travel with the rest of the Sydney Thunder squad.
In response to the injuries, Ollie Davies and Hugh Weibgen have been brought into the Thunder side as concussion substitutes. Davies, who had been in the team hotel due to a virus, quickly made his way to the ground after the accident. The Thunder will continue to monitor both players’ conditions closely as they await further updates.

The incident occurred in the 16th over of the Scorchers’ innings when Cooper Connolly struck a shot off Lockie Ferguson towards the leg side. Daniel Sams sprinted from the infield, eyes locked on the ball, while Cameron Bancroft charged in from the outfield at full speed. The two collided mid-air, with their heads crashing together in a violent impact.
The Thunder players rushed to their teammates, who were left motionless on the ground, and urgently signaled for medical assistance. Sams appeared to be knocked out cold and was stretchered off in a mini-ambulance, while Bancroft, bleeding heavily from his nose, was able to walk off with physio support. Play was halted for about 20 minutes as Thunder captain David Warner, along with the team’s coaches, engaged in discussions with match officials regarding the incident.
“They both are in the hospital, so I’m praying that they can come out soon and be back on the park,” said Sherfane Rutherford, who hit a boundary off the last ball to lift Thunder to a four-wicket victory. “I actually saw everything but when I saw the blood, I turned because I’m not a fan of blood. It was pretty tough.
“It was definitely motivation for us. We had a little chat before we went out to bat and it was just [do it] for them.”
The collision took place close to where Hilton Cartwright was stretchered off after suffering a fielding mishap in the BBL season-opener.
Karun Nair set a new world record for the most List A runs without being dismissed, scoring an unbeaten 112 to guide Vidarbha to an eight-wicket victory over Uttar Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Nair’s remarkable achievement saw him surpass former New Zealand allrounder James Franklin’s record of 527 runs, setting a new benchmark of 542 runs without being dismissed.
The record-breaking feat places Nair among some distinguished names in List A cricket, with others like Joshua van Heerden (512), Fakhar Zaman (455), and Taufeeq Umar (422) also featuring on the list. Nair’s unbeaten streak marks a significant milestone in his career and adds another feather to his cap in the cricketing world.
Karun Nair’s remarkable 112* was his fourth century of the season, and his third consecutive ton, as he led Vidarbha to an eight-wicket victory over Uttar Pradesh, chasing down 307 for 8 in just 47.2 overs. Nair’s unbeaten streak began on December 23 with a knock of 112 against Jammu & Kashmir, followed by an unbeaten 44 against Chhattisgarh. He then scored a season-high 168* against Chandigarh, helping Vidarbha chase down 316, and capped off 2024 with another unbeaten century—111* against Tamil Nadu.
In Friday’s match, Vidarbha finished at 313 for 2, thanks to Yash Rathod’s unbeaten 138 off 140 balls, forming a massive 228-run stand with Nair for the second wicket. The victory secured Vidarbha’s top spot in Group D, accumulating 20 points from five games, ahead of second-placed Tamil Nadu (14) and Uttar Pradesh (14), who sit in third.
