Younis Khan Appointed Mentor for Afghanistan Ahead of 2025 Champions Trophy

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has continued its practice of appointing mentors from the host country for global tournaments. For the 2025 Champions Trophy, former Pakistan captain Younis Khan will step in as the mentor. This follows a similar approach taken for the previous two tournaments: Ajay Jadeja was appointed as the mentor for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, and Dwayne Bravo served as the bowling consultant for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. In those tournaments, Afghanistan achieved significant milestones, with their sixth-place finish in the 2023 World Cup, securing automatic qualification for the Champions Trophy, and their semi-final appearance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, their best-ever performance in a global tournament.

ACB CEO Naseeb Khan emphasized the importance of having a mentor from the host country for the Champions Trophy, given the tournament’s location in Pakistan. He expressed confidence in Younis Khan’s ability to guide the national team, noting Afghanistan’s previous success with hosting country mentors. “We have appointed Younis Khan as the mentor for our national team for the upcoming mega event and wish him the best of luck in his crucial assignment,” Khan said.

Afghanistan is placed in Group B at the Champions Trophy, alongside Australia, England, and South Africa. The tournament will be primarily held in Pakistan, with only matches involving India being played in Dubai. Younis Khan, who retired from international cricket in 2017, boasts an impressive career with 118 Tests, 265 ODIs, and 25 T20Is. After his retirement, he ventured into coaching, briefly serving as Pakistan’s batting coach in 2021 before parting ways with the PCB due to differences.

ICC rankings: Boland, Bumrah, Bavuma and Babar make gains

The Tests in Sydney and Cape Town saw remarkable achievements, with Scott Boland making a notable rise in the ICC Test bowling rankings. After taking 21 wickets across three Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests, Boland moved into the top ten for the first time. His match-haul of 10 for 86 at the SCG helped Australia seal the series 3-1, earning him the Player-of-the-Match award. Boland’s impressive performance led to a 29-position climb, bringing him to joint-ninth in the rankings, with an average of just 13.19 in the series.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah continues to dominate as the top Test bowler. The Indian Pacer led the wicket-takers’ chart in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with 32 wickets at an average of 13.06. His outstanding performance saw his rating increase by one point, lifting him to 908, further solidifying his position as the No. 1 Test bowler in the world. Bumrah’s rise also improved the record for Indian bowlers in the rankings.

Bavuma, Pant, Babar rise among Test batters

South Africa’s impressive batting performance in the second Test against Pakistan, where they scored a massive 615 in the first innings, has had a significant impact on the Test batting rankings. Temba Bavuma’s century of 106 has seen him rise three places to a career-best No. 6. Ryan Rickelton’s remarkable knock of 259 propelled him 48 positions up to No. 55, while Kyle Verreynne’s contribution of 100 lifted him four spots to No. 24.

Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who scored 58 and 81 in the match, moved closer to the top ten, advancing to No. 12 in the rankings. His consistent performances continue to improve his standing, but he remains just outside the elite group of top-ranked Test batters. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant of India has regained his place in the top ten after hitting 40 and 61 in India’s defeat in Sydney. His solid contributions earned him a rise of three places to No. 9.

India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal maintained his position at No. 3, staying behind world No. 1 Joe Root and second-placed Harry Brook. Jaiswal’s consistency in the middle order continues to make him one of the most promising young batters in the format. These shifts in the rankings highlight the importance of individual performances in high-stakes matches and their impact on the global cricket landscape.
